I think remakes are only in order when the general availability of a game is very low, and the game warrants a remake.

I'm not sure if ffviii lives up to either of those standards.

Yeah, Square would definitely spend a ton of money on re-releasing and updating a game that many consider to be one of the worst Final Fantasy games. Also, the game is readily available at most online stores, so it would be pretty pointless and financially stupid to spend money on updating the game. :-X

You know I actually agree with what Hynad usually tends to say about how people who label a game as "emo" as a negative quality are retarded morons, like for VIII/X.

Anyway it doesn't have to have voices either, and if it didn't I'd definitely get it since VIII's my favorite one.

I'd probably get it to see how it compared with the older version.

As for voices, I liked how they didn't include any voice overs in the dialogue. It lets your imagination go further. Plus, they made sure that the only voice you did hear was the voice of a professional singer.

When the main character's signature line is "Whatever..." I think it'd be equally retarded to defend that.

At any rate, how does one go about voicing these lines?

Seeing as Squall says all of them, the delivery of said line would be pivotal to the overall quality of the game's presentation. Nevermind the fact that the entire ATB system is ridiculously outdated and FFVIII's junction system is hopelessly broken.

Urgh. No. Over half the voices they gave to the characters of VII annoy me so I can't even imagine the voices they'd put in VIII. The thought of Rinoa and Selphie speaking alone makes me shudder. I've never really liked voice acting. I prefer to give them their own voice in my head.

In my opinion fancy graphics and voice actors are not enough reason to remake VIII.

[.Pearl.]
06-06-2008, 01:23 AM
It would be nice to play the game and actually be able to identify facial features on the characters. They would also have to change the battle system in a remake; the Junction system is the fucking worst idea ever.

So you'd rather have the exact same main character over and over again?

Meh, anyway, voices and battle systems aside, I would prefer to see FF8 world on an advanced system more that the FF9 or FF7 world, if anything.

Now, FF6 being remade for PS1 would have been ultimate.

But anyway why would everyone assume that a remake would have voices?

Honestly though, with everyone obsessing over how there should be an FFVII remake, an FFVIII remake would at least be better than that. Seriously.

I can't tell if you're joking or not, but if you're not why wouldn't they have voices? Voices are "in" and simple text is "out". If they opted to remake VIII and did not put in voice acting the majority of fans would flip out.

Well of course it'd be awesome(to people that like VIII). But what you have to think about is marketability, there's a good chance they will.... one day. Since the PS3 isn't fully backwards compatible, so there is a better chance. It'd be just fine imo, seriously the voice actors from KH1 and 2 should be great. David Boreanez was so unexpectedly great as Squall.

I actually played KH before playing FFVIII and I have to say, the VA may be good but Squall/Leon's personality in KH is completely different to what it is in FFVIII, I didn't find him to be emo at all in KH.

But they better not keep the Raijin and Fujin and Seifer of KH, or a lot of fans would be pissed. But anyway, I think those three in KH2 are supposed to represent the younger versions of them so they probably wouldn't anyway.

Didn't I see a topic about this not too long ago? whatever...

VIII was one of favorites. It was probably the most different as well. I was actually quite fond of the battle system and junctioning system in VIII (ohz noz!). Cool to see magic having the most important role in the battling aspect of the game, and it's cool to see no MP. The GF's were awesome. I like how they had HP and they could sacrifice damage for you. I don't mind a cutscene in battle as long as it is creative and entertaining (although Eden was a bit too long. I would change that if there were to be a remake!) The special abilities they offered were nice. I liked the characters. I liked Triple Triad. Some aspects in the story could leave the player a bit confused at points, but the game felt fairly complete to me. I don't know if we need a remake actually...It was awesome for its time (for me), but I don't know if I trust Square-Enix to remake it now. Maybe I would be satisfied if the original team were there to remake it. I don't like how the new teams for the FFVII spinoffs have shit all over FFVII.

Maybe a remake is required to have voices (despite what I said earlier), but now why does everyone think it must have the same battle system? X and X-2 were set in the same world and don't have the same battle system... same with the FFVII spinoffs. It'd just keep the story and nothing more.

When Pokemon RBY was remade into FR/LG, did they keep the battle system? No... they stayed with the up-to-date battle system and kept the old story. Any FF remake I would expect to see do the same.

Wait... Pokemon changed the battle system?

The third generation battle system was very different to the first generation one, there wasn't even item holding back then... and the third ones had double battles. So... yeah, they changed a lot of things about it, and they remade the first generation games with third generation battle system and graphics.

There isn't a whole lot of leeway to change it, but it's still a dramatic difference to the original.

Honestly though, before X-2 came out, did people expect the same battle system as X? I wasn't really around then but it seems like that's the case...

Truthfully though, they can remake the FF8 world and retell the story, maybe add a few new easter eggs, get rid of things that don't matter, maybe have different secret GFs and add or drop some of them, and give a whole different battle system, so fans can feel like they're actually playing a NEW game, since different strategies would be required.

That's a moot point anyway, seeing as there is absolutely no need for a rerelease or a remake. It's not like Greatest Hits PSX games (or systems to play them on) are super hard to come by like, say, good/mint SNES carts.

Actually I think they re-release games when they (Square) moves to another system, or the game becomes unplayable. Like when FFA was released finding a good copy of a NES FF wasn't as hard as now to find (Especially with the internet). Seeing as PS3 has flimsy backwards compatibility, there is a very real chance of FF7-9 getting a remake (not now, S-E has a lot on its plate now). And if S-E abandons the Sony ship and goes to Microsoft the chance gets even better.

Psycho_Cyan
06-09-2008, 02:52 AM
I'm not trying to nitpick you or anything, but does Squeenix actually have a set, verifyable policy for rereleases/remakes? Meaning not just rumors and speculation? Like I said, I'm not trying to flame you or anything like that, I'm just trying to figure out what's based in fact and what you've picked up from the rampant fanboy rumormilling and your own speculations.

Also, what makes you think that Squeenix might abandon Sony for Microsoft? Their most ambitous project in several years is due to be a ps3 exclusive last I heard. Besides, if they "abandon" Sony for anybody, it would appear to be Ninty, seeing as the number of titles for Ninty's systems has been steadily increasing (FFTA, FFTA2, the GBA/DS remakes, Dragon Quest, Chocobo's Dungeon for Wii next month, etc...) over the past couple of years.

jewess crabcake
06-09-2008, 03:30 AM
1) Yes I know you aren't trying to flame me, and for that I thank you. I'm basing this on as you said pure speculation. I'm only observing precedents. Granted there are no "official" re-release rules, I only saw a pattern and came up with a theory.

2) I said "IF". I know that there is a strong chance that they will not leave Sony, but there is still a chance they will. PS3 sells were less than predicted how much less I'm unsure, but I believe it is the least owned system out of the 3 next gen systems. Also I think if they(S-E) do bail, they would go to Microsoft. I say that because Microsoft's Hardware can support their demanding games. Though the Wii is not weak, it is the weakest next gen console (graphically speaking) of the 3 conssoles.

Jeff, FTR you're horribly misinformed. EVERY SINGLE PS3 is 100% BC with all PS1 games.

PS2 is a different story. Only the 60 gig is 100%. Doesn't mean you can "play" them all (Guitar Hero, for example, you can't use the guitar peripherals and the GH3 one isn't BC... fuck you Activision)
