Chrono Trigger DS:

An alleged scan from Jump magazine popped up in the Japanese message board 2ch, showing the groundbreaking announcement that Chrono Trigger is getting an "enhanced remake" for the DS this Winter. Here is the scan:

I am afraid to ask, seeing how they fucked up the later games in the franchise.

As for the remake, I hope they make it more challenging, or at least add in different difficulty modes. ;)

If FFIV DS is anything to go on they may decide to up the difficulty a little, for boss fights at least.

Well, this is obviously related to Chrono Trigger, the scans aside. A big clock with the same archaic midi *tick-tock*? If not it's a pretty cruel joke to fans.

I'm hoping it's not a remake actually, since it's already been remade somewhat recently. As it stands, I can think of no reason to buy this game a third time that isn't fuelled by sheer fanboyism. Of course, everything said thus far is simple speculation.

ThroneofOminous

Sounds like (http://www.rpgamer.com/news/Q3-2008/070208a.html) it's more of an enhanced port then a remake.

Hm. I'll reserve my judgement, but the few features revealed thus far aren't very encouraging. Dual Screen play and touch screen functionality are mainstays of the DS. Mentioning that is like saying "Yes, our game works." A new dungeon might be cool, but I'm more interested in the wireless feature they've withheld for the time being.

Thanks for the link.

That psx "enhanced port" was total crap. They added some anime scenes and some extras...nothing to gameplay that I noted. It had horrible slowdown too. Only reason it was so well received was because Chrono Trigger for SNES was no longer in print and the only way to get it was through E-bay or God himself handing it to you.

I don't have either version...so I might pick this up.

This has killed most of my excitement for the game, to be honest. I mean, it's still great that they're doing something with the Chrono franchise but a port with DS functionality isn't anything to sing about. Unless you haven't played the original, of course.

Yeah the touch screen funcionality could more likely be bland, but microphone funcionality? Hold on to your hats!

Oh, so you think it's an invalid complaint, do you?

You don't think it's more reasonable for them to simply put Chrono Trigger on the Wii's Virtual Console and spend their time making something new? I, for one, will never in a million years pay the full new game price for a game that old. I'd be okay with paying 800 points to get a virtual console version, but I absolutely refuse to even consider shelling out four or five times that price for a DS version.

Shame on everyone who's actually excited about Square-Enix pissing on you.

Much still remains unknown. Still, I'm somewhat apprehensive that Square hasn't announced at the very least a graphical update for the upcoming DS port.

At this point, I want to see more new features. Don't get me wrong, I like the game, but for SE's part, how hard would it be to add more to the gameplay at this point than a single fucking dungeon?

That's like saying, "Why reprint classic literature?", because not everyone got to read it. It's still a classic piece that everyone should get a chance to enjoy. Not to say some new things wouldn't be gladly appreciated. I'm just saying if there is nothing else on the grill, I'm fine with a re-release.

Well, Chrono Trigger is not a book or play, it's a game. Sensible gamers expect a bit more than "classic" gameplay to justify a re-release.

It seems Square has had ample opportunity to make the core game available to new gamers for ages now. Other popular series have already made themselves available through Xbox Live Arcade or the Wii Virtual Console like Castlevania: SOTN and Soul Calibur (with the original DC version extras, mind you) for a fraction of the cost of a physical release. Many other early titles were simply added on to new games like the original Metal Gear to Subsistence. Bethesda, makers of The Elder Scrolls series, even gave their first game Arena away for free. But Square gouges gamers for ten year old games with a modicum of new content and fans pretend it's pat.

Edit: Mind you, I'm still not saying Chrono Trigger DS will exemplify this since details are still forthcoming.

You realize that they've already done that (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yowpqXWkhS4&feature=related) right? I believe it's being released here in September.

I was not aware, to be honest. I don't really keep up on video games that much anymore. All the more reason to get a DS, it would seem. Not that it has likely convinced me, but it's a start.

As for what Prak said, I see nothing wrong with re-makes. If the demand is there, then why not? There are a large number of people that enjoy when Square (and other companies) do this sort of thing, and are willing to pay for the re-makes. If you think I'm an idiot for that, I really couldn't care less. Last I checked, I'm the one who decides what sort of things I get excited over.

I'd say it really takes minimal effort to upgrade the graphics a bit and ship it out. I highly doubt that it is detracting from other projects to the point where they just do not happen. However, you're more than welcome to continue to be a pisser about this.

J. Peterman
07-03-2008, 04:34 AM
Prak, I'd normally agree with you but given that most everything Square puts out is horrible now I don't really care much if they just want to re-release some of their better games.

ThroneofOminous
07-03-2008, 05:19 AM
Problem is this is hardly a remake; it's more along the lines of an optimized port for the DS. The new additions will be nice but are they nice enough to justify the $35-odd price difference between a 'new' SE DS game and a virtual console game? Anyone who owns the game already should probably take this into account before they go out and buy it.

Or not, I don't really care. Either people buy it and the renewed interest in the Chrono series spurs SE into making a new installment or people don't buy it and SE begins to realize that porting old games isn't going to cut it anymore. Both are equally (un)likely, so it hardly matters.

Based on their press release (http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/07-02-2008/0004842770&EDATE=/) Square Enix seems to think this game is God's gift to gamers as well.

What RM said. Seriously. If someone wants to spend their money replaying a game they've enjoyed previously and would like to enjoy it all over again, particularly if its remade, more power to them. I can see the debate if its pretty much just a direct port (you might as well invest in a flash card for the DS or something along those lines and grab a few roms in that case), but if its anything like FF3 for DS (or FF4 which I think has yet to come out), I see no reason why this shouldn't be something that (SOME) old fans of the game and newcomers to the genre might want to play.

As far as the new generation of gamers sticking to their own generation of games, that's such BS :| If I were new to gaming, I think I'd be pretty turned off by it in general. Yes, there are some really exciting games coming out, but everything seems so heavily focused on graphics. If the "new generation" can look past graphics and enjoy the older games for what they are, I think that's great. Granted, a remake implies newer graphics, but on the DS I hardly think that counts D: Either way, why can't they enjoy games that weren't made in their time?

And with DS functionality, you guys are missing one major thing. DS functionality is dual screen, touch screen, Wi-Fi, but it is also portability. Have fun taking your Wii (and its VC) to school with you to play some CT in your downtime.

What I love about the DS is that I can play shorter, less involved games like puzzle games or the "brain training" type stuff, OR, I have the option to carry around some (j)RPGs or action/adventure games with me, if I want something to do while I'm out of the house. Above all, the fact that its a portable console is the main (imo) "function" of the DS.

Updating with Japanese trailer (http://neocrisis.com/content/view/1705/41/).

If the video is any indication, it looks like CTDS will in fact be more of an enhanced port than a remake. Personally, still waiting on more features to justify the use of the word enhanced. I could care less who buys it, but I hold my own gaming to higher standards. CTDS has yet to meet them, and seems it probably won't. Oh well.

So far it sucks to be right.

EDIT: The official NA site (http://na.square-enix.com/ctds/) was also updated with an English version trailer.

I'm happy with wireless play and another dungeon. As great as Chrono Trigger is, it wouldn't take much work to screw the whole game over. I personally wanted just a port for the longest time so I'll take any additional content. Atleast we can all be happy that they're revisiting the series, even if it is 'just' and enhanced version. I agree with Prak. If they want to revive the Chrono Series they could do it by releasing Chrono Break, the next game in the series that was cancalled. And while they're advertising for Chrono Break put Chrono Trigger on the Wii VC. Square-enix reviving games that most people already played one way or another is just milking the fanbase, like all of these stupid FFVII compilations, and other spin offs.

Cassie is also right about Enix. They were better than Squaresoft, and Terranigma was better than any Zelda game, even Ocarina of Time.

J. Peterman
07-12-2008, 05:47 AM
I'd seriously be okay with this game if it wasn't just some port. I just don't see the point in playing the games again if they are basically exactly the same with perhaps a few minor differences that really won't be worthwhile. It just gives people a portable Chrono Trigger unless they have homebrew for either handheld in which case they should already be able to get that.

there are people who prefer original games to simple ports
there are people who prefer ports over original games (as long as there are classic games or personal favorites)
there are people who prefer both ports (same reason above) and original games.

WHICH ARE YOU? im the third kind

its not the end of the world, besides, while i can anyday gladly ask a guy who lives on the other side of the city to get me a SNES CT off ebay, , i can also gladly spend 30dlls on a mere port, extras or not, of a game i so adored when i was younger.

besides, this game doesnt mean SE will stop making original games.
also this discussion is pointless.

lets pretend for a moment that the DS version is a port:
of 10 people, 5 complain that it would have been better as a remake.

now lets pretend its a remake:
of 10 people (all 10 played it in the snes), 5, more or less, will complain that it should have been a port, shielding themselves with the phrase "if its not broken, dont fix it".
of course, this applies even if the remake turns out better than the original.

Except the issue isn't Square Enix re-releasing the game with few meaningful additions; it's Square Enix re-releasing the game with few meaningful additions and changing the same price as a new game. Given, they could still surprise everyone and sell it for $20 or something but based on their past history with the Advance games this seems unlikely.

Star Ocean is made by Tri-Ace, but published by Enix/Square-Enix

lenneth

Pretty sure that is accurate -- as much as I like the games, I'm not super clued in to the publishers, creators, etc. I just know tri-Ace made it, Enix was involved somehow.

Square-Enix might have been merged at the time of SO3? I'm not sure. Everything prior would've been Enix, I think. Pretty sure Enix was involved with the original SO as well.

ThroneofOminous
07-12-2008, 06:30 PM
SO3 was made before the merger. The director's cut (ie the version we got) was released after the merger though so the publisher is noted as Square Enix during the opening credits.

I would assume the main influence Enix had/has over Tri-Ace (if any) is more in the area of ensuring the game is marketable rather then making contributions to the actual content of their games. It is a separate company after all.
