I was referred to this youtube video of Scott Bromley of IGN.com, flaming Final Fantasy. Kinda ironic as the majority of the FMV footage shown is from Final Fantasy XIII lol. Here's the link:

A Final Fantasy Rant (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cJNpPN6AO8&feature=dir)

I couldn't help but laugh my ass off at this, I mean, if he hates Final Fantasy as much as he claims, then why can't he just pass it off to someone else at IGN.com to review etc. He even gives his email address at the end of the video for people to send him emails about his rant and he 'personally will respond to every one'. LMAO.

Still... made me laugh, which is good lol.

EDIT: And here's the link for another rant which, sorry, I was laughing my ass off to the point I fell out of my chair. My god... some people have way too much fuckin time on their hands.

If you really want to personally e-mail him send to this adress sbromley@ign.com. That other mail is just hatemail for IGN like they don't get enough of that already.

But still it's a really funny video!

Lul, IGN. Credibility and/or significance flies straight out of the window. Although, people are allowed to their own opinions, however pointless and irrelevant it may be.

Final Fantasy isn't so great, yes.
But if you're just going to make a review like that, don't, and let some other reviewer do it.

I assume that is supposed to say "I don't give a shit"?

Well... When I play a game, I do give a shit about the story and characters, as they do play an important role for me when it comes to gameplay.

However! Afterwards, except maybe for some little chitchat about the game, I really don't care about the story anymore.
And what that guy in that video says is pretty much true - I've seen places where people honestly argue about if Cloud is more emo than Squall or some stupid shit. Which is sad, but the truth.

Luckily, I can talk about Final Fantasy like a human on the Shrine, and ain't confronted with fanatics, hence I've been staying here. <3 FFS

Nice. What else would sh*t mean? Personally I guess they kinda matter for the first playthrough because I can't exploit it's battle system and don't know what else to do, other than follow the story. After that it's long forgotten. ;)

The great thing thing about Final Fantasy is that it hasn't been online'd yet. If they start making more FF's online like XI and the soon to be XIV it's gonna be even worse. People are gonna talk who's more emo while fighting monsters and there is nothing worse than that :(

I'm sorry you have that preconceived notion that that is what FFXI is about. I can speak from personal experience it is not like that. Granted you do have your usual drama in your linkshell (aka Guild), but you have that in real life as well. In FFXI you are controlling one character, in short your avatar in the game. You are playing FFXI with other real people from all over the world. Of course there will be drama, as like I just said, you are interacting with all manner of people with their own goals/objectives of what they want to accomplish.

From my own experience, during battles in FFXI, the party are usually talking about battle tactics or requesting certain spells to be cast etc. Of course, there are some parties you may be invited to, where you are the only English speaking person, and to communicate you have to rely on the ingame Auto Translate function to get things across. However, most of those parties, do garner experience as well as items rather quickly.

You have your own opinion about FFXI, and that's fine. I'm not criticizing your opinion, just offering my own point of view regarding FFXI.

I have nothing against FFXI. I haven't even played it. I just despise online games. FFXI is no exception. Even if it's a great game I might actually enjoy, the fact that it's onine seals the deal for me.

I originally felt like you in that regard. If you don't believe me, send Enkidoh a PM asking if I hated online games. I admit, I did. At the time though, I had played only EverCrap (AKA Ever Quest) and Guild Wars. Both of which sucked worse than a street corner hooker.

It took Enkidoh years to try to get me to play FFXI, and it was only when it was released on Xbox 360, I gave it a try. Suffice to say, yes, I do like and enjoy FFXI. Do I enjoy other MMO's? No, they do not interest me in the least (Until The Old Republic... then FFXI will be left in the dust...), but there is something about FFXI I do enjoy. Probably being able to play a FF game with others being the main thing.

Still, you're entitled to your opinion.

I don't like MMORPGs because they are dull to me.

It's basically just going outside the town, killing monsters and doing some fetch quests till you have the highest level and best equipment, and as soon as you have achieved this status, you face against other human players and it comes down to "who presses the button quicker and has the better attack/spell for this situation". And a little bit of socializing. This kind of gameplay I can have easier in fighting games, and there I don't need to invest countless hours of grinding. <3
And the socializing I can have when I invite 3 buddies and we play some Smash, heheh.

What you like about it, is what I hate. Why should I have to team up every time I want to level up or do anything else? I prefer doing things by myself.

As for me can't say MMO's have interested me much since the Diablo games which I played really long ago. And I never played those online.
Really the only games I like playing online are RTS games and that's only because the AI aren't challenging in the least.

And online gaming also spawns online gamers. Have you seen this:

Umm... I'm sorry, but you have FFXI mixed up with World of Warcraft. FFXI is a story driven MMORPG. There are no player vs player battles per se, as there is what is termed 'Ballista', however this involves team vs team battles and can only happen in certain areas at certain times. Whereas in WoW, you can walk up to someone and say "I don't like you. Let's fight." (That's what happened to me in the first five minutes I played WoW. Suffice to say, I never played the game again.).

With FFXI, you have the initial story of the country you initially chose to serve. Then, after completing the story of that country you can change to one of the other two and do the same there (You can change allegiance after hitting a certain rank level). Then there are the expansions, which are heavily story based, and do require the level grinding as the bosses of these expansion are quite tough and well beyond the level cap you the player can achieve.

Hironobu Sakaguchi's original idea for FFXI, was to create a online community, to bring players together from all over the world to enjoy the game, to basically help each other out (Hence why it was a cross platform release). Unfortunately, the reverse has happened. Players tend to congregate in their own language groups, most probably due to the fact they can't speak another language. There are exemptions to that of course.

You do get your standard boasting about who has the better gear etc, but nowadays, there's more and more gear available now so that kind of attitude is just a minor annoyance nowadays.

I'm not saying FFXI makes people like that, but other games certainly do, as you can see.

As of last year, SE has made soloing in FFXI a lot easier, so one could theoretically level from 1 to 75 solo, without looking for Experience parties. Things like Fields of Valor or Campaign Battle (The latter being available if you have the fourth expansion 'Wings of the Goddess'.). Also with FFXI, you are not locked into one job class from level 1 to 75 as you can choose from a variety of jobs (Six available at the start, the rest after unlocking them that is) and change jobs at your Moghouse or Nomad Moogles when you want. WoW, EverQuest etc, if you want to play as another job you have to create a new character and choose that job from the start. For instance, the second WoW expansion, Rise of the Liche King, brought in the new job "Death Knight" (WoW's version of a Dark Knight imo) in which case players created a new character for that single job. FFXI has more versatility than most other MMORPG's.

I haven't played FFXI, so I don't know. But I'm very cautious about MMORPGs. The dullness is one of the major aspect, the other is the big time-consumption, which is also a major downpoint for me. D:

That's standard for all MMORPG's unfortunately. Most other MMORPG's that I know of, aren't really story based/driven, which is another reason I enjoy FFXI more due to the heavy storyline.

Still, it's all to the gamer themselves to choose what they want to play and when they want to play.

Telling me this at every possible situation that opens up for you doesn't make it more insulting to me.

I am just going by my own personal experiences. I'm not talking about the Shrine, never was - if you would've read my other posts you would've seen that. But I've been to places where his depiction of FF fanboys/girls actually DID occur. So it's not pulled out of his ass. Some of the things are different from what I've experienced, of course, but in general, my experiences are similar to his.

Man, that guy in the second video is spot-on in everything he said (all except for "Tee-dus". It's "Tie-dus", dammit!!!), and I know I couldn't have said it any better.

As for FFXI, it's not that I hated MMORPGs, but I certainly didn't understand them for a long time. I was under the misconception that FFXI had no story elements and was basically like WoW (not that it's a bad thing, but as I've said before there's a time and place for everything). But an MMORPG that's story-driven?? I'm there!! And the fact that it's Final Fantasy? I'm double there!!

Not that I really have any input on the topic at hand, but Centercore, WoW actually does have a huge amount of story to it, both lore and ongoing.

CC
01-04-2010, 08:21 PM
Agreed; I guess for me, with WoW, the story elements are presented a little less on the foreground than they are in Final Fantasy games, and oftentimes I tend to overlook them without meaning to. And since they mostly blend into the quest at hand, I wind up considering it more so as just "another chance to level up", without paying enough mind to the purpose behind what I'm doing. But you're right, I shouldn't make it out to be a game without any story; Final Fantasy just seems to give us a lot more reminders of the plot at hand than WoW. Another thing with WoW is that it's so full of dimwitted idiots (mainly on the Echo Isles realm..) who are just your typical "ur momma's so ugly that she blah blah blah" bunch, they sometimes take the brunt of my fiance's and my attention when trying to play. Not that that's a major element or has anything to do with much, but it does play in as a factor sometimes. But beyond the utter dipshittery that lingers there, WoW is an awesome game :D
