Glad it's coming to the PS3, but just from your viewpionts what are your cons and pros about the game and what would you like to see in the game.

For me: Cameos such as fayt, cliff, ratix, claude, possibly the lesser ones like nel, albel etc. etc. (Cameo appearances as well as battles against them)

New Skills, Items, Arranged Musics of the past series, New characters (The ones above?)

I never played the game because it was on the Xbox360 D:< which alot of ppl said it wasn't looking good as it should seem if it were on the PS3, so when it comes out i'll get it.

Known Feats: PS3 version will contain exclusive new content. Set to be inluded are new characters, an enhanced battle system, different menus and character portraits and access to both Japanese and English voices.

What is it with people with the preconceived notion that the Xbox 360 is terrible?

I had Star Ocean The Last Hope, and disliked it immensely but if others like it then so be it.

Well 1) Graphics (I dont care as much for graphics only the fun i get out of a game is what i care about) 2) im guessing for this game the controls don't fit this game ( I too felt weird playing it on a big controller) 3) Well people dont like games that were on PS3 if it had a sequel or series (In that matter) ported on to other system like the Xbox360. An example of this would be Samurai Warriors 3 on the Wii and there's ppl complaining why it isnt on PS2 or 3. Its all in the mindset when it comes to it.

Traded it with a couple other games in for Darksiders. Better game imo.

1: Graphics don't make a game. They're the icing on the cake. I've compared Saints row 2 on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and both versions, graphically, were the same imo.
2: Just takes time getting used to the controller. People didn't like the N64 controller, but I thought it was pretty good. Games like Goldeneye and Rogue Squadron played quite well with the N64 controller, as did games like Lylat Wars, Mario Kart 64 and more.
3: There are a lot of companies who are disgruntled with the stringent conditions SONY are enforcing upon them. In short, they are having to enter agreements to make games solely for the PS3 and not other consoles. NINTENDO was guilty of this on the NES and SNES, and with the PlayStation, SONY. Honestly, who cares? If you like the Xbox 360, fine. If you spread your legs as a SONY whore for the PlayStation 3 that's your own business.

Well...

Speaking as someone who did like Star Ocean 3 and indeed likes the series in general, I must say that TLH is a pretty disappointing game.

To be fair to it, it isn't as bad as it often appears to be, but it inspires so little goodwill with its many, many faults, that I can't imagine many people will play it long enough to give it a chance to impress.

But let's be frank - it's been a bit of a lean time for RPGs in general, this generation. Most have been some degree of forgettable and/or poor. Sadly, this isn't really an exception to that trend.

The good news is that it at least has a good battle system. Real time combat beats random battle, 'line up and take turns' systems in my book, and the game provides a throughly and consistently enjoyable experience in this field.

But the main plot and the characters are often pretty poor.

The series adopts its usual mix of a generally serious and moral Star Trekesque tone with typical Jap obsessions about cat girls and youth standing up to ancient evil etc.

Which would be fine, except that this time around, the writers seem painfully unaware of how cheesy and schmaltzy the dialogue sounds. After a pretty decent intro movie, which is fairly stirring at times, it's all gets outrageously overwrought.

The main character, Edge is particularly guilty of this. He isn't actually all that bad a character, but it often seems like he is, because the writer saddle him with so many silly 'uplifting' speechs and prespostrously emo scenes of despair etc.

He's typical of Star Ocean's preference for the 'sober, upstanding young man' template of hero, which does actually appeal to me, broadly speaking. But honestly, Edge has to be seen to be believed in some scenes.

(One scene in particular is so silly, you'll be howling with laughter for hours afterwards.)

It's a frustrating game, basically. If you stick with it, you'll find that every time you are ready to completely write it off, it'll suddenly do something that's quite good - only to then do something idiotic again.

Unless you're happy to endure some truly woefully naive (not to mention pretty sappy) dialogue, this will often feel like a massive chore to play. And with no memorable baddies to speak of, few truly great sequences and a very up and down cast of main party members, it's hard to recommend it.

I can only say that despite how bad it may sound, despite how bad it may seem as you begin to play, it does have its moments. There is a truly excellent sequence of cutscenes near the end, that every Sci-fi RPG fan will be thrilled to watch and some of the developments with the characters are pretty good.

But overall, it's a game that could have been so much better, if more talented writers and producers had gone through it, eliminating the poor lines of dialogue and finding better ways to tell the story than the wishy washy way it often is.

I know I haven't exactly filled you with confidence about this game, but what do you want? I'm not going to lie to you and say it's the greatest thing ever.

I can only say that it is at least as 'good' as most of the JPRGs released this generation (Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery to mention but two such 'classics'...)

If you really must play a JPRG, I'd suggest one of the recent Namco titles instead, though. Tales of Vesperia and Eternal Sonata (which isn't that recent, I know), are both much better than this.

But so long as you're not going to really miss the money, I guess The Last Hope will do a turn. Just don't expect miracles.

The Last Remnant and Star Ocean The Last Hope were both developed by Square-Enix, and imo, SE has lost it's touch with RPG's now. Both are lacklustre titles with no real promise of being a good game. Infinite Undiscovery, by Tri-Ace, falls into the same bag of crap the other two are in imo.

I hear you, Death (an ominous thing to say, now I think about it!).

Square have gotten themselves into a bit of a state, lately. They appear to have been trying too hard to appeal to Western audiences, by upping the action in their games and taking their foot off the pedal with story and characters (I mean, I liked FF12 as it happens, but I can't deny the story was often... well, absent).

I guess there aren't the only ones at fault, but we expect more from them. It's particularly worrying that FF13 is coming out at a time when the company is low on form (and some of the early reports have had the knives well and truly out - here's hoping they're wrong, though).

It's annoying, because I think that Eastern developers need to preserve what makes their games unique, rather than try to emulate the west. Bioware have pretty much got the market for RPGs with a western flavour sewn up anyway.

Because they tend to have more scripted sequences and cutscenes etc, JRPGs are at their best when they tell stories that get whole parties of characters acting and talking together.

Western games tend to focus on individual heroes (i.e your customised hero), with the other party members (if you even have any) having little substantial contact with anyone else in the party, other than you.

One of the key niggles in FF12 was the lack of party interaction, and this has continued in their recent games. The Last Remnant has very little party conversation that isn't just exposition about where to go next and Star Ocean TLH isn't much better at it.

In fact, one of the only JRPGs to get this right recently was Lost Odyssesy (although that game was unfortunately hamstrung by a litany of different errors).

To drag this back on topic from my meandering train of thought, consider Star Ocean 3. The first disc was tightly scripted with good interaction between the core party of Fayt, Cliff and Nel. They worked well on screen together and the game took its time, allowing you to grow attached to them, as they overcame various trials.

TLH gives no such attention to character and party interaction, racing through all kinds of scenarios and adding characters at a furious rate, then refusing to do anything interesting with them.

JRPGs are never going to beat western RPGs on action and depth of engagement with individual characters. Games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age simply offer so much scope to find out about team members and develop personal connections with them (and because you can customise your main hero, you obviously feel closer to them, too).

But when they do it right, JRPGs still have the edge when it comes to showing a party of pals, going on an epic journey together. Parties that have connections between all the characters, not just them and the main character.

Okay, rant over.

Bottom line is: Star Ocean 4's not up to much, worth a spin only if you can buy it cheap, quite frankly.

Square Enix needs to get its act together quickly. If FF13 turns out to be a dud... Well, I'm not made of money and I don't intend to keep shelling out on their games, if this is the best standard they can manage.

But I'm keeping my fingers, toes, hell even my back crossed, that FF13 will be good. It'll just be too depressing if it sucks, so I don't even want to think about that.

I have the 360 version. I forgot why I stopped playing. Maybe it was easy. I mean mostly I'd build up my board of exp tiles (which is kinda easy to do) and just use a character like uh... the bow girl to keep my distances from my enemies from getting the board broken. It's kinda pretty, but I'm curious who the 'extra' character was. The story was bleah...

It's one of those annoying games that is extremely easy one minute, then throws you an insanely hard section or boss. (The 8 stage ambush by a Grigori Shadow Squad is an absolute nightmare).

And the last dungeon and boss are just outraegous. The dungeon is filled with puzzles and very tough enemies, yet it has only 1 save point - outside the final boss's room.

I hate it when games do things like this. It can take a long time to get through certain areas of games, (and assuming you don't stumble into a baddie you are completely unprepared for).

Spacing save opportunities out this much, doesn't allow for the gamer suddenly needing to drop everything and stop playing, for whatever reason.

And what if it crashes?! It was the same story in Tales of Vesperia at times. Ludicrous distances between save spheres... makes me mad... Mad!

And the last boss is so much harder than anyone else in the game, it's just untrue. The ending vignettes are nowhere near as good as SO3's either (and to add insult to injury, you need to earn each one, this time round).

Seriously, even in a dodgy patch for JRPGs, there are way better games than this about.

I love challenges like that, its just like SO3. About what you said earlier about character interaction, I do like that myself, especially with the tales series. The only reason i'd get TLH is for what's new and the historical part of the game since it's a prequel. And for reference, whats the difference of level difficulty of the last part of So3 and So4?

Byrd: I've only played Star Ocean: TTEOT and Last Hope, so I can't comment on those bosses you mentioned.

But SO3's final Boss, Luther Lansfeld, was easy in both his incarnations. He had one attack that was quite dangerous (Insanity Prelude), especially if you weren't high level, but that was it.

And even then you could learn to avoid it. The worst thing was that your party mates usually blundered into the pylons and got themselves killed...

Star Ocean 3's bosses weren't that hard - some of the regular enemies near the end were far more fearsome! Only Robin Wind really sticks out as a particular sod.

But SO4's final boss, Satanil... Holy Christ (well, antichrist, anyway...)!

His first form is nothing special, but then you have to do a kind of maze, and possibly fight up to 4 of the bosses you killed earlier in the game. Then you have to fight 2 more incarnations of the boss.

The first stage (when he has his rotating shield) isn't so bad, but it takes ages. But when the shield finally breaks... watch out! He starts using insane attacks and his HP must be unutterably high.

I pounded and pounded and pounded on this guy for... must have been close to 30-40 minutes (seriously, it took that long).

And my party wasn't underlevelled. I never really felt like I'd lose, but as time went on and he still wasn't dying, it got pretty tense, I can tell you.

By far the best bit of the game though, precisely because of that reason.

From what you said, RPG's should be only on PS3 instead of Xbox 360? Why? My opinion about the PS3 is based off of having played some games on my cousin's console, and none of them really 'grabbed' hold of me. Therefore, I can find no justification to pay out $400-$500 AUSD for something which I have no use for.

It's all about personal preference. I have friends and my cousin going on and on about how great the PS3 is and how it's superior to the Xbox 360 due to Blu-Ray and apparently being able to surf the net on the PS3. I don't know if the second part is correct or not, but they've forgotten the Sega Dreamcast. That had great games on it, as well as being able to surf the net on it as well. They just think Sony are the innovators who came up with it.

I admit, I do have a PlayStation and a PlayStation 2, however what drew me to the Xbox, was Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. On the Xbox 360 there are some great RPG's, likes of Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Origins, Lost Odyssey, Oblivion and others. Final Fantasy XI Online I admit, was another game which drew me to the Xbox 360, and for that I prefer it over the PlayStation 3.

Saying that a console is better suited for a specific genre of game due to it having Blu-ray and that a console which doesn't have it is not suited for the same genre is kind of a petty observation from my perspective. When I purchase a console, I look for what I will get the most enjoyment out of and which has some titles on it which interest me. Granted there are some games I do not like on the Xbox 360, but that's a given.
