Hey people, new here.

I've just written an article on my site about why I think a Final Fantasy VI remake should be prioritised over a Final Fantasy VII remake. Give us some feedback, positive or constructive are both welcome. :)

Johnny Mercyside: Why I Want a Final Fantasy VI Remake (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/10/why-i-want-final-fantasy-vi-remake.html)

I didn't read your article but I'm completely with you....

I want a VI remake for an HD console. I thought many things were lost in the SNES. The Quality of many scenes could be potentially improved with better graphics & sound.

Also I thought that the graphics of this game on the SNES were a kinda cheap & not properly good, there are older games that had better graphics IMO.

It's one of the reasons in my article :)

At least FF7 was in 3D, FF6 remains in 2D.

FFVII wasn't in 3D though - it used pre-rendered CG backgrounds that were still 2D (the NPC/PC models were 3D goruad-shaded polygons though). Only the battle scenes technically were in '3D', and even then it was rather limited.

And no, I'm somewhat of a philistine, in that I don't want to see a 3D remake of FFVI. It's perfect as it is in it's 2D glory.

I'd rather see a 3D re-imagining of FF 6. Who wouldn't beg to see the final battle with kefka in ps3-level graphics??

I don't need to specifically go into what parts of FF7 were 3D, but you have and you're right. It's still 3D in my eyes, just an early 3D game.

As for you not wanting a remake, I can understand why, I just think differently. :)

I would prefer No Voice Acting.

I prefer the most definitive version of any game, myself. For me, the GBA ports of each of the originals outdo the source material. FFIV is full of minor glitches but overall it just feels like the true finished product. FFTactics on PSP is another good example. Not that the originals aren't awesome (hell, there's all kinds of things in FFIV on SNES that I think were done a lot better than the GBA port) but as a full, cohesive package the games tend to stand better on their own with a little more of a touch-up. The enhanced visuals of I, II, III and IV for handhelds (you can't tell me V and VI got any real visual update, because they didn't) make them fit better with the current generation of games. And although I'm not somebody who cares much about graphics, FFIV sure is prettier to look at on the GBA.

if theres a remake of star wars episode 5-6, hamill can TOTALLY play palpatine now, with no makeup.

I'd rather just see them create a new trilogy set after Return of the Jedi. Since Palpatine doesn't actually die but sort of is reborn, Hamill could continue his career as the reborn Emperor.

I vote we make the dude from the new Star Trek movie the new Luke Skywalker.

first.
I didn't.
I was just responding to their comments.

As for FFVI, I liked the game.I have it.
Kefka is probably one of the greatest villians in FF.
It does seem more like an ensemble cast of characters as opposed to the leader driven games we have had recently.

Would they remake it though ?
Maybe for the PSP or it's successor.

They would probably add additional characters and scenes like they have done with some of the other games they have remade.

Yet somehow I don't see it happening.
Maybe because it's a numbered FF as opposed to a spinoff or an ancillary game.
if they remade FFVI then people would wonder why they can't /won't remake the other numbered FF games and that might open a can of worms for them.

shrugs.

So upon reflection I tend to doubt it will happen.

I would like something much in the vein of XII or VIII, Crisis Core or XIII were just too pretentious for me, XII & VIII have just the right amount of technological feature in their own releases back in the day, so I would like the equivalent of that in a PSP or PS3.

What do you think?

JohnnyMercyside
02-07-2011, 09:32 AM
I think we should have the battle system FFX style, as it can easily work with the older game styles, as it just removes the ATB gauge. I don't think they should do anything too fancy with it battle-wise, otherwise a lot of the purists would be disappointed.

Darth Revan

FFX battle system? No thanks... The battle system of VI worked very well.

JohnnyMercyside
02-07-2011, 01:29 PM
Yes but would it work with big updated graphics? Also would Square-Enix want to remake with a battle system they care jack about? I'd welcome an ATB system I just doubt they'd keep it, and thus think FF10's is a better alternative.

topopoz
02-07-2011, 02:33 PM
No, the Battle System of VI is just perfect, they need to modify or update the Deseperate Attacks, because the conditional triggers in the original were almost inexistent.
That's the only thing I would touch of it's battle system.

JohnnyMercyside
02-07-2011, 02:45 PM
I'd like them to keep it, I just doubt they would.

Another thing (which I touch upon in my article) is the lack of balance in the characters and how powerful they are. Magic sucks in comparison to say Edgar and Sabin. That needs a rework.

topopoz
02-07-2011, 03:01 PM
And I doubt they would Re-Vamp/Remake the game, but let just throw our good wishes to the fountain xD.

The Character Balancing I don't really mind it, there's not one FF game that it's balanced.

Plus magic IS MORE POWERFUL than Edgar & Sabin, I just have a Gamebreaker formula & the game was a pretty cakewalk to me.

EDIT:

Yes but would it work with big updated graphics?

Look at Dragon Quest, millenias with the same battle engine & it's still holding the crown of one the most successful JRPG's franchises, at least in Japan.

Eh, sometimes tradition is overrated...and if done right a remake would be a boost for the older fan-base.

While I enjoy FF6's battle system, in a 3D environment it would be nice to get a kind of more dynamic/cinematic battle system...not just a character standing in one place and moving forward to cast magic missile.

FFIV had plenty of Char Dev, specially on Cecil, Rydia & Kain.

FFVI had some Char Dev too, but the characters themselves didn't had that much depth in their backgrounds, except for Cyan, Terra & to a lesser excent Locke.

I know what you mean about Hardcore Char Dev Inglorion, the Char Dev on 7 it's the same as VI, the difference lies in the background of the characters themselves.

They didn't change, they did the correct translations. That's nowhere near the same thing, really. Correcting mistakes (like when you meet Sabin on the mountain) does not mean its a remake, nor does a simple port.

So your definition of a remake would be to change what made the game...good? >.<
Remaking it from the core to change every bit of it is just well, silly. If they are going to do that, might as well make a new FF game because it wouldn't be FF6 at that point. :p

Agent0042

No, I'm not sure exactly what my definition would be. It would probably include a combination of elements.

Not really, I disagree. They both get from A to B, but on different roads. There's a difference between a remake and a reimagination. Resident Evil 1 was a remake, Silent Hill 1 is a reimagination. Everything was different in the Silent Hill reimagination. In Resi 1 the same outline is there, just tweaks and additions. That's a remake.

Final Fantasy VI is my favorite in the series, and the thing I would look forward most in a theoretical remake is if they rearranged the entire soundtrack and performed it with a live orchestra. The soundtrack has been my all time favorite video game music up till now. Lately I've been listening to the Distant Worlds music, and can't help imagining how great it would be to have the visuals match the live performance of the opera song. Such amazing music.

Going through the original Final Fantasy games on the GBA has been a real experience. While every Final Fantasy I have played so far has held true to its reoccurring themes, symbols and often characters, this chapter did more than that; It took its first huge step away from the traditional style of storyline and game play.

Hmm.. i concur. a remake with Square-Enix as they are would devastate the original foundation. A graphical overhaul is more or less just a facelift, and a rearranged or "remastered" soundtrack can be easily done without messing with the game itself.

In my opinion, the battle system seems fine as is, and to be honest, if it were made into a more flashy real time battle style, it would take away from the charm that made it famous.

People who play a jrpg do so for many many reasons, ranging from plot, character depth, and music, to graphics and controls.

However the former is the foundation of a JRPG, the literal "story soul" as i call it, and the latter is the actual visual aspect, and the process of attempting to bring you, the player, into their world.

I would much rather them not alter anything. Especially since most of these can be done outside the actual ideal of altering the source material.
